Purpose: Improve the quality of life for Salvadorans, other Central Americans, and the Latino communities of Los Angeles by assisting immigrants to obtain Permanent residency; promoting community and economic development projects and strategies for low-income communities, promoting the civil participation of Central American immigrants in the political system of Los Angeles and disseminating the richness of the Salvadoran culture and identity throughout the racial mosaic of Los Angeles. Another of our goals in establishing ASOSAL was to create a cultural body that would allow us to promote our cultural identity and share it with new generations. |
History: ASOSAL was founded in April 1991, by a group of 14 Salvadorans, in an effort to fight for immigrant status and defend immigrant rights. It deserves mention that 6 members of this founding group were TPS applicants, and this initial group campaigned on the national level for the extension of the TPS Program. This campaign was carried out through hundreds of posters, radio and television campaigns, and the support of volunteers, churches, and other allied organizations. After carrying out a series of campaign activities, including marches, vigils, demonstrations, petitions, and postcard campaigns, ASOSAL organized delegations to Washington, DC to try to raise political support for immigration reform. Over time, the work of ASOSAL has been consolidated into the following departments: Legal, Cultural, Development, Public Relations, and Humanitarian and Volunteer Committee, which has allowed us to improve our services to the immigrant community and to our beloved country of El Salvador. |
