The consular process is a procedure where a person requests an interview at the U.S. embassy in their home country.
Like the Adjustment of Status process, the consular process is the final step for approval of permanent residency.
For people already in the U.S. who had to apply for a waiver and had it approved, they will have to leave the country and complete the consular process. This involves returning to their home country for a short period to undergo a medical exam, attend their immigration appointment at the U.S. embassy, and wait for their visa-stamped passport. After this, they can return to the U.S. as a permanent resident.
The estimated time to be outside the country can be between 2 to 3 weeks (this will depend on the specific country).
