A family petition is a legal procedure established by immigration authorities to request permanent residency for a close family member.
Family petitions can be filed by U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents. Depending on who files the petition and for which family member, they are classified into 5 categories, each with different waiting times.
A U.S. Citizen can petition for:

The family petition is always the first step toward obtaining permanent residency. Following the petition, there is always another procedure, such as an Adjustment of Status or a Consular Process. (This will depend on each person’s individual case).
